Secretary Zinke’s Decides to Preserve Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument
PORTLAND, MAINE – Congresswoman Pingree (D-Maine) issued the following statement in response to Secretary Zinke’s executive summary report recommending that Maine’s Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument be protected:
“While I look forward to reviewing the full details of Secretary Zinke's report and assessing its impact on Maine, I am encouraged that he has recommended Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument be preserved.
"One year ago this week, Katahdin Woods and Waters Monument welcomed its first visitors. Within twelve months, these visitors have breathed new life into the region. Businesses have grown, tourism has prospered, and people have experienced even more of Maine’s natural, uninterrupted beauty. When President Trump tasked Secretary Zinke with reviewing Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument, I invited him to visit the site and see for himself how it has transformed the area. He took a canoe ride and met with locals. He heard for himself how many hours of public deliberation went into the establishment of the Monument and how important it had become to the local community. I applaud Secretary Zinke’s deliberative study of the Monument, his recommendation to protect it, and look forward to learning more of the details of his report. I hope President Trump will act on Secretary Zinke’s recommendation to protect all of our beautiful national monuments.”
