Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement about the ongoing terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya and media reports that one of the terrorists may have links to Maine.

The attack on a shopping mall in Nairobi is a brutal act of terrorism and my heart goes out to the people of Kenya and all the victims of the attack. Those responsible should be brought to justice swiftly.

We have all heard reports that one of the terrorists may have connections to Portland, but it's important not to jump to conclusions or assume the reports are necessarily true. And whether or not the reports are true, we should not forget the many positive contributions the Somali community has made to our state, and we should continue to treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Pingree has been in touch with the FBI, State Department, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice as she follows the situation.
