Texas grand jury decides to exonerate Planned Parenthood, indict anti-abortion activists

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement after a Texas grand jury cleared a Planned Parenthood clinic of any wrongdoing and indicted the anti-abortion activists who produced a heavily edited video smearing the organization.

The people behind those videos had a very clear agenda: they wanted to shut down Planned Parenthood and deny women the right to make personal, private medical decisions.  And it's clear they didn't care whether they lied and broke the law in the process.  Anti-abortion activists have demanded investigations and that's exactly what they got—an investigation by a Republican District Attorney and a grand jury that found it was the activists who were lying and breaking the law, not Planned Parenthood.

I hope now my Republican colleagues in Congress will finally give up their repeated attempts to use this discredited smear campaign as an excuse to defund Planned Parenthood and take away access to birth control, family planning and basic health care for millions of Americans.
