Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is awarding the Boothbay Harbor Sewer District with a grant of $254,000 and a loan of $596,000. The funds will be used to replace and upgrade existing sewer lines for Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay, and Southport.

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve long advocated for greater federal investment in rural infrastructure because I’ve seen the positive impact it can have on the communities I represent,” said Congresswoman Chellie Pingree. “Wastewater treatment is an environmental and public health imperative for cities and towns across Maine. This significant federal funding will ensure Boothbay Harbor’s wastewater is handled efficiently and safely for years to come and will help the town to make overdue improvements.”

The funding comes from the USDA’s Rural Development program and will be used to replace approximately 2,000 feet of existing sewer line and extend the main approximately 800 feet on Ocean Point Road in Boothbay Harbor. These improvements will address infrastructure and capacity issues and will restore the design capacity of the system. These upgrades, long overdue, will make operations more effective and efficient and help the three towns in the district improve their economic development opportunities.
