Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced the Westbrook School Department is the recipient of a $125,000 Drug-Free Communities grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy in cooperation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

“This federal funding will help Westbrook community partners to educate kids and parents about substance use prevention—keeping our kids healthier and safer for their future, “ said Pingree. “With the rise of substance use disorder in Maine, it’s critical that we support communities which are proactively working to preventing substance misuse through support.”

The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) program supports communities as they mobilize individuals and local organizations to prevent youth substance abuse. The Westbrook School Department received one of 42 new grants to coalitions throughout the country. DFC has awarded nearly $90 million in grants to community organizations throughout the country.

• Project Description:
• The Westbrook School Department was awarded a FY 2019 Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant in the amount of $125,000 by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, in cooperation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The coalition serves Westbrook, Maine, a community of 18,400. The goal of the coalition is to establish and strengthen community collaboration in support of local efforts to prevent youth substance misuse. The coalition will achieve its goal by implementing these strategies:     
• Address the use of substances by targeting root causes including social and retail access, community norms, laws and enforcement and parental and peer attitudes toward misuse.
