Pingree Announces Maine State Library, Bowdoin College Awarded National Endowment for the Humanities Grants

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced federal two grants totaling more than $325,000 will be awarded to two institutions in her district. The Maine State Library  will receive $210,270 and Bowdoin College will receive $115,000, both from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

“I’m thrilled that Maine State Library has received federal funding to digitally preserve our newspapers so that future generations will be able to access our stories and learn from our past,” said Rep. Pingree. “At a time when teachers have been asked to adapt under unprecedented circumstances, I’m grateful that Bowdoin College has been awarded federal funding to support the professional development of our educators. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve long worked to increase federal NEH and National Endowment for the Arts funding because the arts and humanities are great ways to bridge what divides us and spur economic growth in rural states like Maine.”

Details of the grants are below:

Maine State Library
National Digital Newspaper Program
Program Description: Support to preserve and digitize America's historic newspapers.
Outright Amount: $210,270

Bowdoin College
Seminars for School Teachers
Program Description: Support to create a summer professional development program for school teachers.
Outright Amount: $115,000

Pingree is the Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior and Environment, where she has long-advocated for greater investment in the arts and humanities. She is also the co-chair of the Bipartisan Congressional Arts Caucus.
