Pingree Statement on the Results of the 2024 Presidential Election

Today, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement on the projected results of the 2024 Presidential Election:

Like so many Americans, I’m deeply saddened by the outcome of the presidential election, and fearful of what it means for our country in the weeks, months, and years ahead. For the rights and safety of women in Maine and across America. For the future of our children and grandchildren. And for the most vulnerable among us—including our state’s immigrant communities.

For the sake of our democracy, it is imperative that we respect the results. And we can take solace in knowing that come January, there will be peaceful transfer of power as chosen by the American electorate. But that does not mean we should remain silent, succumb to despair, or forget the power we have—as Mainers, as Americans, and as participants in a democracy. We all need time to process what happened and come to terms with our new reality, but then, it’s time to get to work.

Regardless of which party ultimately controls the House, I remain committed to working across the aisle to achieve the kind of common-sense solutions the American people deserve. But make no mistake: I will not support any law or policy that threatens our democracy, harms our most marginalized communities, or jeopardizes the future of our children and grandchildren; and I will continue to serve the people of Maine’s First District the same way I always have—with honesty, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of my fellow Mainers.
