Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced today that the City of Bath would receive a total $8.8 million federal investment—consisting of a $2.3 million grant and a $6.5 million low-interest loan—to upgrade its sewer system. The funding comes from the USDA Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants Program, which has been slated for deep cuts in President Trump’s proposed budget.

“No one wants to see a shutdown, but kicking the can down the road for the fourth time is no way to run the government. The Appropriations Committee has done its job developing a responsible spending agreement—it’s time for Republican leadership to bring a balanced and bipartisan bill to the floor without politicizing it. Every time we delay, we put off addressing things like the opioid epidemic, veterans’ needs, and hurricane relief.

One of the most important committees in Congress is also the least understood: Appropriations. And it’s not surprising. From “302(b) allocations” to “manager’s amendments,” the workings of this committee are nearly indecipherable to anyone outside Washington.
